Lucky Airlines Unlucky

Recently, Shanghai Juneyao Airlines (Juneyao) became
the focus of public criticism.
Netizens commented that Juneyao Airlines
“created a miracle of aviation history of the century.”
But that was a stunning “miracle."

Juneyao risked a collision, by not giving way to
another plane, which issued a distress call.
Let’s take a look at what happened.

On Aug. 23, a China』s microblog had a rumor about Juneyao.

It said that after a Qatar Airways plane signaled “Mayday”,
Juneyao refused the air traffic controllers』 instructions
and rejected to give way to the Qatar Airways plane.

The Qatar Airways plane finally landed with fuel that could
last for only 5 minutes.
According to the international practice, same as “SOS",
“Mayday" is an international emergency signal.
Once “Mayday" signal is emitted, all should understand that
a life-threatening disaster will soon occur to a vessel or plane.
The online post provoked netizens』 discussions.

Confirmed through multiple sources that Juneyao Airlines』
refusal to give way took place on August 13.
However, the incident hasn』t been reported.

A netizen commented, “In over a hundred years of aviation
history, it never happened that a polite would refuse
to give way to a plane giving Mayday signals.
Juneyao broke a record in China』s civil aviation history.”
Yuan Sheng, ex vice-captain of China Eastern Airlines,
said that aviation accidents are very sensitive.
So, the Chinese authorities tighten the control over such
news reports, fearing an negative international image.
Yuan Sheng (ex-vice-captain of China Eastern Airlines):

The authorities have a very strict control over aviation issues,
including risks, collisions, flight accidents and so on.
Once something happens, they would lock up the data,
so journalists wouldn』t have access to them.
Then they would prepare a standard report on the incident,
and arrange a specific journalist to report accordingly.
On August 25, an alleged Safety Alert Bulletin (No. 17, 2011)
of Juneyao Airlines was being circulated online.
The file detailed the whole process of one plane』s
refusal to give way to a Qatar Airways plane.
Many netizens could not believe such behavior. They said,

“The pilot should』ve unconditionally complied with
the Air Traffic Control』s instructions.
As the captain even refused,
he should be sued for intentional murder.”
Wu Ruirong (ex-employee of China Southern Airline):
If the two aircrafts collided that day, that would be a disaster.
As a plane generally has over 100 people onboard.
If a collision happened, 300-400 lives would be lost.
That would be terrible consequences.

Now people, who are concerned, are calling on
the authorities to tell the truth.
On August 24, Juneyao Airlines said in a statement that
the incident is being investigated by
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC),
so far the results have not yet been released.
Regardless of the investigative results,
the incident has discredited Juneyao Airlines.
The netizen sighed that “Lucky Airline (Juneyao in Chinese),
you』re really unlucky. Who dare take your flight in the future?”
