Charlie Hebdo Incident in Hong Kong:
Next Media Attacked With Fire Bombs

After the Umbrella Movement was over, Hong Kong’s Next Media,
which was seen as a supporter for the Movement,
suffered a spate of arson attacks.

Founder Jimmy Lai’s residence and the Next Media Building
in Tseung Kwan O were attacked with fire bombs
almost at the same time.

Hong Kong police found two vehicles suspected of being used
to throw the petrol bombs, and did not rule out the
possibility that they were orchestrated attacks.

The public referred to the incident as the Charlie Hebdo
incident in Hong Kong, and condemned the Chinese Communist
regime of ruling Hong Kong with violence.

The public also urged the police to bring the assailants who
challenged Hong Kong’s rule of law to justice.

According to recordings of the surveillance cameras outside
of Lai’s residence, a man wearing a mask got out of the car,
ignited a bottle suspected to be filled with flammable liquid
at 1:50 am on January 12.
As the security guard stepped forward trying to stop the man,
he fled by car, leaving burn marks on the ground.

Almost at the same time, outside the Next Media Building
in Tseung Kwan O, a vehicle parked at the entrance.
Glass bottles suspected of containing flammable liquid were
thrown out of the car toward the building’s two entrances,
causing a small fire.

Debris was scattered on the pavement and the driveway.

After the incident, Hong Kong police found two vehicles
in a remote place, which were suspected of being used to
perpetrate the incidence.

The license plates had been removed before the cars were
burned, seemingly to eliminate the evidence.
So it’s likely to be a pre-orchestrated assault.

Chairwoman of the Hong Kong Journalists Association,
Sham Yee-Lan, said that this series of incidents were
obviously targeted at Next Media.

Arsonists were burning Hong Kong’s freedom of speech
and freedom of the press.
She condemned these thugs of challenging the rule of law.

Sham Yee-Lan: Their acts were to threaten and intimidate
journalists, asking them to keep silent.
This is something very serious, which was challenging
the freedom of press in Hong Kong.
In addition, they were challenging Hong Kong police’s
capabilities of dealing with violence.

According to the Apple Daily, after Lai’s residence
and the Next Media Building were attacked with petrol bombs,
a batch of Apple Daily’s newspapers were stolen.

The truck carried the stolen newspapers, in defiance of police
interception, slamming into the police in Hung Hom.
The sheriff fired four rounds to stop it.

Another police officer suffered minor injuries on his head
and feet, and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Members from the pro-democracy camp of the Hong Kong’s
Legislative Council strongly condemned the violence.

Civic Party leader Alan Leong: I condemn the act of using
violence to pressure Next Media in Hong Kong,
attempting to create white terror to stifle freedom of speech
and freedom of press.
For the wounded police officer, we’d like to express our
condolences and deep regret..

Senior journalist in Hong Kong, Ching Cheong, said that
this incident was obviously perpetrated by underworld thugs.
How could it be possible for ordinary people to
take such measures?
Ching appealed to Hong Kong people for opposing
the Communist regime’s ruling Hong Kong
with underground approaches.

Ching Cheong: Hasn’t ruling Hong Kong with underworld
syndicates become a policy of the Chinese regime?
If so, our society should oppose it more resolutely.
I think this is a dangerous trend.
If the Chinese regime chose to use criminal syndicates
to eliminate the voice they don’t want to hear, then it should
be an alarm for the entire population of Hong Kong.

Taiwan legislator Tuan Yi-kang said in his FaceBook:
What’s the difference between this incidence and the terrorist
attack against the magazine in Paris?
It’s indeed horrible?!

Apple Daily’s president Ip Yut Kin said in an interview that
it was not the first time for Next Media to be intimidated.
He added that it might have something to do with
Apple Daily’s position of supporting democracy and freedom,
“because some people do not like it."

Sham Yee-Lan urges police investigations as soon as possible,
and should not let the criminals run amok, treating the rule
of law as nothing, and called on the news media group, whether
or not one agrees on the stance should condemn the violence.

Sham Yee-Lan: Though the approaches or positions taken
by the Apple Daily or the Next Media might not be liked
by everyone, because of this violence, we should step forward
to oppose the violence.
Take the Charlie Hebdo for instance.

The magazine might not be liked by everyone in France,
due to the terrorist violence, some 3.5 million people in
France participated in a march to say no to the violence
and to counter the violence.
I think the situation in Hong Kong is the same.

It is reported that prior to this arson, Jimmy Lai had been
attacked time and again.
On November 12 last year, Lai was assaulted with several bags
of smelly pig offal by three men at the Admiralty area
occupied by protesters.

On June 18 two years ago, the gate of Jimmy Lai’s residence
was slammed by a speeding car, and he was intimidated
with a knife and an ax put outside the gate.
