Guo Meimei and Mother under Spotlight

The business manager of China Red Cross,
Guo Meimei, flaunted her wealth on the Internet
and made the China Red Cross the focus of media attention.

China’s Red Cross soon was in a confidence crisis.
Guo Meimei disappeared from the public view until August 3,
when Guo and her mother were interviewed
by Professor Larry Lang on live TV.
Many people thought that the interview was contrived and
Lang was trying to explain Meimei’s innocence.

Guo Meimei and her mother were invited to an exclusive
interview hosted by Professor Larry Lang on August 3,
on the Decoding Commerce Program at Ningxia TV station.

Guo said in the show that her foster father was Wang Jun,
a real estate businessman in Shenzhen.

Guo Meimei: “He (my foster father)
isn’t the well-known Wang Jun at the Red Cross.
I learned that there was a Wang Jun, who worked at Red Cross,
but my father is in Shenzhen.
I think he works as a real estate investor.

Guo Meimei explained that she once joked to her foster father
to ask him to work at Zhonghong Boai Company as president.
This company is connected with China Red Cross.

She later announced herself on the Internet to be the
Commerce General Manger of Red Cross Commerce.

Larry Lang: “Is Zhonghong Boai, a subsidiary of Red Cross?"

Guo Meimei: “It seemed to be affiliated with one
of the commercial companies under the RC."
Lang:"Oh, yeah, there is a commercial company under
the Red Cross, and there is also the Wang Ding Corporation,
which established Zhonghong Boai. I got it.
I was just elaborating for you."

Chinese media said that Zhonghong Boai had assets
totaling about 70 million yuan (US$10,878,000).
Wang Jun alone invested 10 million yuan (US$1,554,000).
He resigned from the company before the company formally
opened its door for business.

The public also focused its attention on Guo Meimei’s
Mini Cooper and Maserati.
She admitted that she did own both cars,
with one being gifted by her foster father, the other by her mom.

Guo’s mom, Guo Dengfeng, acknowledged their wealth.
She said that they had two houses in Shenzhen,
in as early as 1990, and millions of yuan in savings,
all of which was gained by investing in stocks.
She said she and Wang Jun “have no relationship".

Guo Dengfeng: “In 1990, before Meimei was born,
I had two houses in Shenzhen and millions of yuan in cash.
I started to invest in stocks back in1990 and made a fortune.
I started when there were only five stocks listed on exchange.

However, netizens found her statements highly questionable.

Blogger Lidun Milk Tea, from the Economic BBS thinks that

it’s too hard to earn millions of yuan within a few months
with only 5 stocks worth only tens of thousands of yuan.

Lidun Milk Tea said, ““The Red Cross scandal caused by
Guo Meimei has not died down yet,
but now her mom’s stock investment myth plays out.
The hidden truth behind the myth has yet to come to light."

An netizen reporter nicknamed Weilu said that

the interview was nothing short of a show to
make it easy for Guo Meimei to explain herself.

Yangcheng Evening News reported,
after Guo Meimei flaunted her wealth online,
the Red Cross’s reputation was tarnished and as a result,
many Red Cross branches received virtually no donations."

NTD reporters Tang Rui and Wang Mingyu.
