Pope Allowed To Fly Over China For The First Time.
Are Attitudes Changing?

The Pope sent a telegram of greetings to the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP) leader as the plane flew over
China on its way to visit South Korea recently.

Has the CCP changed its attitude towards religions?
Please see the report.

Pope Francis flew to South Korea on August 13 for a 5-day
visit.
As the plane flew over China, he sent a telegram to greet
the CCP leader Xi Jinping and the Chinese people.
It read “Upon entering Chinese airspace, I extend best
wishes to your excellency and your fellow citizens, and
I invoke the divine blessings of peace and well-being
upon the nation."

Following Vatican diplomatic etiquette, every time a religious
plane flies over another country, it would send a telegram
greeting to the leader of the country. The etiquette wouldn’t
normally raise much attention, but China is an exception.
Since the CCP seized power in 1949, the Vatican broke
off diplomatic relations with the CCP.

In the past religious groups either avoided flying over China
or were refused permission to fly over its space.

For instance, when Pope John Paul II visited South Korea
for the first time in 1984, he didn’t send a request to the
CCP to fly over China. After being refused by the Soviet
Union, Pope John eventually flew over the North Pole.
He stopped at Alaska.

Pope John Paul visited South Korea again in October 1989,
and asked the CCP to fly over China, but was refused.

The CCP allowed the Pope’s plane to fly over China for the
first time.
Many oversea media believe that it shows that the CCP
perhaps has improved its relations with the Vatican.

Hu Jia, Beijing activist, “it’s not relevant at all, because a
civilian plane flying over a country doesn’t involve military
or any threat. But if you refuse them and make them go
around, that would be a big issue;
You would violate relevant laws and regulations
of civilian aviation."

Voice of America reported that some Chinese Catholics
including Chinese students studying at Korean Theological
Seminary originally planned to attend the activity, but CCP
officials threatened those students and their fathers.
If they attend any of the activities, they are at
risk of reprisals.

The CCP has forcibly demolished over 130 churches and
crosses called “demolishing illegal architecture" this year.

Hu Jia, “there’s no righteous belief in China. Cracking down
on family churches and the like have been an issue for a
long time. As long as you don’t believe in Marxism, Leninism,
and Mao Zedong Thought, you are an imaginary enemy."

Chen Jiangang, mainland lawyer and Christian, “I’m
personally against such restraint of personal belief.
Belief should be absolutely free.
It’s a matter of peoples’ thoughts.
The government doesn’t have the right to interfere,
and can’t manage things well."

The CCP media reported on August 7 that an official in
charge of religious affairs said the CCP should establish
“theological thoughts with Chinese characteristics," by
combining Christianity with socialist values.

Chen Jiangang, “first, it’s ridiculous. Second, it’s ignorant.

It’s absolutely wrong for the government to tightly control
peoples’ beliefs. Absolutely wrong.
Without freedom of belief, it’s tyranny."

Hu Jia, “isn’t it the most ridiculous thing in the world? These
Chinese characteristics are just some kind of puppet.
It profanes your belief and takes its place.

It uses a group of CCP members wearing gowns of fathers
or priests to make announcements.
In fact, it uses this means to brainwash people and create
its harmonious society that we call a blood-sucking society."

Hu Jia indicated that if the US created a US characteristic,
people would laugh and redicule it.
But in China, the CCP controls ideology, propaganda, and
the political and legal system.
That’s why it says such ridiculous words.

Hu Jia, “all these made up Chinese characteristics are
nothing but CCP propaganda.
[The CCP means that] your religion can only be used by it,
be it’s tool to protect it’s toxicity.
“You are a heretic, a target for attack if you think
independently outside the CCP’s control or have
independent belief not under the CCP’s control,
and don’t want to be under the CCP’s control.

The trip of Pope Francis visiting South Korea is mainly
to attend the Asian Youth Day Catholic festival.
An estimated 10,000 young Catholics from 23 Asian
countries will attend the activity.
