Jiang Mianheng Resigns, The Response to Jiang Zemin’s Trip to Dongshan Ridge?

The Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Branch just removed Jiang Mianheng, eldest son of former Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Jiang Zemin, from the presidential position. Jiang’s removal has raised public awareness as the anti-corruption campaign is running high. Analysis say Jiang Zemin has lost many allies in the anti-corruption campaign. He attempted to show his power by appearing high profile at the Dongshan Ridge in Hainan Province earlier. However, his appearance caused a reaction from current CCP leader Xi Jinping. Xi took the action of removing Jiang’s son to warn Jiang.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Branch posted via its website on Jan. 8 that Jiang Mianheng will no longer serve in the presidential position due to his age. Shanghai Tech University party secretary Zhu Zhiyuan will take over.

Jiang’s removal was announced at the leadership meeting of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Branch. HR Department director Li Hefeng passed on the news.

Jiang Mianheng is Jiang Zemin’s eldest son, 64 years old born in 1951. Besides serving as the president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Branch, Jiang’s son also serves as the principle of Shanghai Tech University. He once also served as vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences, deputy commander of Shenzhou 5, and deputy commander of Chinese Lunar Exploration Program.

Jiang Mianheng is also deeply involved in business circles, titled “telecommunications magnate." He serves as a board member of China Netcom Corporation, SAIC Motor Corporation, and Shanghai Airport Authority.

Jiang Mianheng is also titled “China’s top corrupt official." Several severe corruption cases such as the case of Zhou Zhengyi, the case of Liu Jinbao, and the case of Wang Weigong are all related to Jiang Mianheng.

Compared to Jiang Zemin who loves public appearances, Jiang Mianheng has rarely appeared in the media for years. As allies of Jiang’s faction were sacked one after another under the anti-corruption campaign, Jiang Mianheng appeared on the CCP official media last February as the principle of Shanghai Tech University. In May 2013, Jiang Mianheng along with Shanghai party secretary Han Zheng accompanied former Chinese vice president Zeng Qinghong to visit Shanghai Han Tianheng Art Museum. However, the CCP blocked the news.

Lan Shu, political commentator living in the U.S., “The anti-corruption campaign directly targets Jiang Zemin. His son has no virtue or competency, but serves in such a high position, obviously becoming a target." Although the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Branch says Jiang Mianheng’s resignation is due to his age, the public is not convinced by it.

Chen Minghui, mainland Chinese political commentator, “It’s definitely not because of age. It’s a result of internal struggle. I think, on the basis that all officials are corrupt, the major conflict and the evil force full of blood debts must be eliminated. Jiang’s faction is the head of evil, and must be cleared out as soon as possible. Other conflicts can be solved through democracy and reconciliation."

News of Jiang Zemin with his children and grandchildren traveling to Dongshan Ridge in Hainan Province during New Year circulated on the internet on Jan. 3. Jiang told Hainan provincial party secretary Luo Baoming that he would spread good words of Dongshan when back in Beijing, and Dongshan will be full of travelers next year. Before Jiang left, he said, “Jiang Zemin came here. It’s a worthwhile trip." The public analysis says Jiang’s public appearance was to stage a coming back to his fellows.

Hua Po, Beijing political commentator: “Put it simply, Jiang Zemin usually lives in Yangzhou of Jiangsu. Why does he come to Beijing? What does he do in Beijing? Is Jiang going to launch an attack?"

On Jan. 4, Jiang Dingzhi, who was dismissed from Hainan deputy party secretary and standing committee on New Year’s day, was dismissed from Hainan governor due to a so called “health issue." Jiang went back to his hometown Jiangsu Province to serve the People’s Congress director, a position without real power. Jiangsu provincial party committee Organization Department director Wang Jiong personally came to Hainan to bring Jiang Dingzhi back.

Hua Po:, “Jiang Dingzhi must had some scandals. Who arranged Jiang [Zemin]’s trip this time? Did Jiang Dingzhi play a role in it? Is his health issue a political health issue or a physical health issue? It’s a big question mark."

On the same day, Nanjing City party secretary Yang Weize was announced sacked, becoming the first attacked “tiger" in 2015. Reports say Yang had close connections with former Nanjing mayor Ji Jianye who was sacked in 2013. Ji is titled the “house keeper" of Jiang Zemin’s hometown, Yangzhou.

Hua Po, “Jiang insisted on a high profile appearance in public. Xi Jinping must fight back to tell all the officials who rules. This is how he is warning Jiang and the others."

Hua Po indicated that Jiang Zemin’s interest group still tries to resist Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption action. Hua believes that a national level “big tiger" will fall in 2015. How Jiang Jinheng will be depends on whether the conflicts between the two sides continue to accumulate.
